Abstract

Premchand, being a progressive writer, promoted literature as a mirror of society and worked for the reforms against the evils of exploitation, subjugation, intolerance, dowry, child marriages that had hampered the progress of the Indian socio-cultural scenario. He changed the taste of readers’ altogether and made novel form as a means of social reformation along with entertainment. He created social, economic and political awareness among the masses and made them think over the social evils. In an attempt to portray his characters in a realistic, idealistic, and reformative manner, Premchand created his characters, in his earlier writing phase, full of reality and enthusiasm.
