ROLE AND ISSUES OF WOMEN IN GALO SOCIETY OF ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Abstract

Galo tribe is one of the major tribe of Arunachal Pradesh inhabiting in the districts of West Siang, Lower Siang and upper subansiri district. Every society has its own jurisdictions. Similarly the Galo society is also governed by its own values and norms. This paper is trying to analyze the role of the Galo women and various challenges faced by their side by side the changes and overall development of women. The Galo family is patriarchal in nature. The kinship is recognised on the side of men. Women play very important role in upbringing, taking care and nurturing of child. She plays an important role in household works also. Male chauvinism plays great role in Galo society; her status is lower than that of men. She faces lots of problems only because of female and women are not treated as permanent members at their parental home,  but all the male members of the family are considered as permanent. Father is treated as the head of the family and all the decisions making and exercise of authority vests with him. Women have no rights to share immovable property of the family, except ornament or jewellery. But now-a-days due to intervention of modernisation, education or cultural contacts with others there have some changes taking place in Galo society.
